Don Giovanni - Lieder Distortion - a rockrhapsody from the opera by Mozart

Lieder Distortion
First, Don Giovanni is one of my favorite operas. I have seen it and sung parts of it many times and especially the death scene is very powerful music. As the inspiration of rock rhapsody through the ages, my idea was that we should do a rhapsody of the death scene in Don Giovanni. The inspiration naturally comes from Mozart's opera, Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Rhapsody in Rock with Robert Wells and the film Amadeus

There is so much music being released every day that I have had a hard time motivating myself to record and release something under my own name. But with Lider Distortion, I can actually feel that this record is not done. Somehow, I think there is a small gap to fill here. Then I am aware that this is a niche but it is exactly what I like. In those days when you advertised an album on TV or wanted to have a big radio hit, it should ideally appeal to a lot of people, or at least many people shouldn't dislike the song, but I still believe and hope that the digital world will be able to accommodate a greater flora and greater diversity than the old media landscape could. Classical music repertoire of Mozart, Vivaldi, Schubert and others. Music made long before the world we live in today today. The spirit is free and the music is free.

“The lyrics of Godless Deceiver are extremely vulgar and disgusting. As I was doing research for the album, I came across the story of Fabiane Maria de Jesus. A 33 year old woman from Guarujá, Brazil, which is a city outside of São Paulo.

“She was brutally murdered by a mob of people that thought she was responsible of kidnappings in the area, following a Facebook post by a local news outlet. The newspaper reported that a woman had been seen abducting children, and many believed her motivation was witchcraft. A sketch of the woman the news outlet claimed was a child abductor was included with the alert, and resembled the victim. It turns out in the end that she was innocent. This group of vigilantes killed her for no reason whatsoever. It really brings into light the importance of never trusting what you see, read or hear about on the internet.

“I decided to write the lyrics from the mobs perspective, which is why they are simplistic. Brutal lyrics about an extremely violent act. The mob never questions if they are doing the right thing, they just acted in unison.

“It is one of the nastiest song I have ever written.”

PRESS RELEASE- “’I Can’t Escape’ is one of my favorite songs on the record. The main riff was something totally different, and when we presented it to our producer (Chris Collier) we had a really good vision for the arrangement, but he totally heard something different! He sent us a few demos back and it was like ‘Whoa shit, there it is!’”

Going into the themes and message behind “I Can’t Escape”, Ogle adds:

“This was one of those songs that Joe immediately had lyrics and vocal ideas for and it really hits home for me with the topic of alcohol and substance addiction. There have been so many people throughout my adult life that I have watched get sucked into the pitfalls of that party lifestyle. When you’re young and in your 20s, nothing is a big deal, it’s all fun and games. Then, when you hit the 30s and 40s, things start to change, right? Suddenly these drinking habits are a bit more controlling than one might have realized and can open the gateway to other substances that are more lethal.

“We hope that this song connects with everyone that has had mental health, addiction, or substance issues in their lives or a loved one’s life. More than anything, the overall theme on this record is about overcoming, rising up, healing, and silencing fears and weaknesses that plague us all.”

Alice In Chains was always one of my favorite bands, especially from the Pacific Northwest. That scene was so huge in the 90s, and so many great bands came from there. Out of all the bands in the Seattle scene, I think AIC was my favorite. In fact, when I was about 13, I got my first CD player in my room, and my grandad took me to the pawn shop one day and my very first CD was "Jar of Flies". I wore that thing out, every song was just amazing to me.

The reason I think I pushed so hard with the guys to do AIC as our first cover, and "Them Bones" in particular, was it was just the heaviest grungy song ever. The lyrics and overall vibe of the song was just very fitting for our style of metal/rock. When we recorded our album Relentless, we found we were doing a ton of back up harmony vocals, and as it was happening in the studio, I just kept thinking of Layne and Jerry, and how amazing their vocals were together, so I wanted to tap into that vibe or spirit when we were recording. Needless to say, Relentless ended up being something we are all very proud off, and now we wanted to pay tribute to one of the bands that was very inspirational to us. We are all fans, every member has their own favorite group or inspiration, but bottom line, this band loves to be at all the shows, fists in air, and loving the music. We hope you feel the same way we did about our cover and tribute to Alice In Chains.
